By this victory, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has now become the first female and first African to win the office of DG WTO since 25 years of it’s existence.
Former Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 emerged winner of the highly competitive race for the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Okonjo-Iweala defeated her only challenger, South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee, by a wide margin. She polled 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat South Korea’s trade minister at the final stage of the race.
By this victory, she has now become has the first African to win the office at the WTO.
The official announcement is expected to be made by the WTO at 3pm Nigerian time.
