It helps prevent those awkward moments where your phone lights up the room thereby reducing eye strain in low light environments.

The dark mode feature helps to minimize eye fatigue by using colors that are closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android respectively.

Dark mode emits less blue light, which reduces the likelihood of your sleep cycle being disrupted: Blue light (which is designed to improve readability in the daylight) cause your brain to stop producing melatonin, which can lead to disrupted sleep cycles, making it harder to fall and stay asleep.

How to Enable Dark Mode on Your App

WhatsApp’s dark mode started rolling out for both Android and iOS users on March 3, 2020. Be sure

If you are using Android 10 or iOS 13, you can implement dark mode by enabling it in your system settings.

iOS 13 (works only on iOS 13)

If you are an iPhone user and you have iOS 13 with dark mode enabled then no action is needed from as WhatsApp dark mode is enabled already. The app uses the same dark grey colour palette, as per the rest of the system.

If it’s not enabled then follow the steps below:

Step 1: Open Control Centre (swipe upwards from bottom of the home screen)

Step 2: Tap-and-hold the brightness indicator until it enlarges

Step 3: Tap Appearance Dark’ to switch to dark mode

Android 10 and below

If you are an Android user and you have Android 10 with dark mode enabled then no action is needed from as WhatsApp dark mode is enabled already. The app uses the same dark grey colour palette, as per the rest of the system.

If it’s not enabled then follow any of options below:

Option 1: Open the settings app > select Display > Tap ‘Dark Theme

Option 2: Swipe down from top of display > Tap the ‘Night Mode Box

Those who are on Android 9 and below can do so by navigating to

Launch WhatsApp

Tap Settings (…) as seen on top right

Tap Chats > then Theme

Tap Dark.

Using less power – Dark mode uses less power and works better in low-light settings – meaning you can use it easily while the lights are off.

Hiding display flaws – If your device has faulty pixels, these can be less noticeable using dark mode.
